Qatar Airways Suspends Flights Amid Regional Tensions
“We are working around the clock to organise additional relief flights where operationally possible and will share further updates as soon as they are confirmed,” stated a representative from Qatar Airways. This announcement comes as the airline has suspended scheduled flights due to the closure of Qatari airspace, a decision influenced by ongoing regional tensions.
The suspension of flights will remain in effect until aviation authorities confirm that the airspace over Qatar has been safely reopened. An operational update from Qatar Airways is expected on March 7 at 09:00 Doha time, providing further clarity on the situation.
In the context of these disruptions, Israeli airlines are preparing to resume limited outbound flights. These flights will be restricted to a maximum of 70 passengers per plane, a measure aimed at managing the current crisis. Ben Gurion Airport has partially reopened for inbound flights to assist in repatriating stranded Israelis, with approximately 120,000 citizens currently stuck abroad.
Passengers planning to fly with Israeli airlines are advised to use early check-in and arrive at the airport 1.5 hours before their scheduled departure. Additionally, 15 percent of all outbound seats from Israel will be reserved for humanitarian, security, diplomatic, or tourist cases, reflecting the urgent need to facilitate safe travel during this period.
Flydubai has also announced plans to resume flight operations to Ben Gurion Airport, aiming to help bring back stranded Israelis from the UAE. This move is part of a broader effort to manage the significant number of tourists and citizens affected by the ongoing disruptions.
As of now, there are approximately 37,000 tourists initially stranded in Israel, with 28,000 still remaining. Notably, 9,000 tourists have successfully left Israel via land border crossings. On Friday, around 15,000 Israelis are expected to return home, with 6,040 anticipated to arrive on 34 aircraft.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact date when Qatari airspace will reopen, leaving many in uncertainty as they navigate the evolving situation. The Transportation Ministry has emphasized that operations will be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of defense officials and in alignment with security developments.
