Thousands of users reported being unable to send or reply to direct messages (DMs), leading to widespread frustration. Complaints about Instagram’s performance peaked at over 6,000 according to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages. Of these complaints, 68% were related to app performance, 19% to server connection issues, and 7% to posting problems.
The outage affected users in major cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York. Many users took to other social media platforms to confirm the outage, sharing their experiences and frustrations. One user expressed, “Is Instagram down? I can’t reply to my friend.” Another lamented, “Instagram is officially cooked. My DMs are a ghost town.“
Instagram acknowledged the issue and stated they were working to resolve it. However, the exact technical reason for the outage has not been disclosed by Instagram. Users reported being cut off mid-conversation, with one stating, “Instagram went down in the middle of 3 different conversations.” This disruption has raised questions about the reliability of the platform.
At one point, Downdetector logged 4,700 complaints, indicating the scale of the issue. Users expressed their frustrations on social media, with comments like, “THIS IS WHY INSTAGRAM IS DOWN I KNEW IT.” Such sentiments reflect the dependency many have on Instagram for communication.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the cause of the outage. There have been unverified claims linking the outage to the US-Iran conflict, but no evidence has substantiated these assertions.
