The Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Scheme (PM-SYM) has achieved a significant milestone with 52.5 lakh enrolments as of March 12, 2026. This non-compulsory, contributory pension plan is tailored for unorganized employees aged 18 to 40 years, who earn a maximum of ₹15,000 per month.

Under PM-SYM, subscribers are guaranteed a minimum pension of ₹3,000 per month after reaching the age of 60. Contributions are shared equally between the subscriber and the government, with automatic debits from a savings account occurring until the subscriber turns 60.

Monthly contributions begin at ₹55 for individuals aged 18 and rise to ₹200 for those at 40. The government matches these contributions on a one-to-one basis, enhancing the financial security of participants.

Launched in 2019, the scheme aims to provide retirement benefits to millions of unorganized sector workers, including construction laborers, agricultural laborers, and street vendors. Eligible applicants must not be income tax payers and should not be covered under EPFO or ESIC.

Registration for the scheme is accessible through approximately 400,000 Common Service Centers across India or online via the PM SYM portal. Spouses of eligible workers can also apply separately if they meet the criteria.

The enrolment period for PM-SYM is open until March 31, 2026, allowing more workers to secure their future. Observers expect continued growth in participation as awareness of the scheme increases.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact impact of the scheme on the financial stability of unorganized workers, but the government’s commitment to matching contributions is a promising step towards enhancing retirement security for this vulnerable demographic.
