Sony has confirmed a significant price increase for its PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, set to take effect on April 2, 2026. The PS5 Pro will now retail for $899.99 in the United States, while the standard PS5 will see its price rise to $649.99. This decision comes as Sony grapples with rising production costs and sustained global demand for its gaming consoles.
Isabelle Tomatis, a spokesperson for Sony, stated, “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.” The price hike applies to both disc and digital editions of the PS5, which will now cost $649.99 and $599.99, respectively.
The PlayStation Portal will also see a new price of $249.99. This increase is not limited to the United States; it will affect all major regions, including North America, Europe, and the UK. For instance, the PS5 will be priced at £569.99 in the UK and €649.99 in Europe.
Sony’s last price increase for the PS5 occurred in August 2025, reflecting ongoing challenges in the gaming industry. Tomatis added, “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”
Industry analysts have noted that the cost of joining the PlayStation ecosystem has increased due to this price rise. Mat Piscatella remarked, “Gaming is trending towards becoming a hobby focused on high-earners,” indicating a shift in the market dynamics.
Despite the price adjustments, Sony has not announced any changes to PlayStation Plus memberships or accessories, leaving some aspects of the gaming experience unchanged for consumers. The PS5 was initially released in November 2020, and since then, it has become a staple in gaming households worldwide.
