Vijaypat Singhania died in Mumbai at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy as a transformative leader in the Indian textile industry. As the former chairman of the Raymond Group, he played a pivotal role in expanding the company into a global fashion powerhouse.

Singhania, who led Raymond for two decades until 2000, was known for his innovative approach, which included diversifying into synthetic fabrics, denim, steel, industrial files, and cement. He transferred his entire 37 percent stake in the company to his son, Gautam Singhania, ensuring the family’s continued influence in the business.

A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Singhania was also recognized for his adventurous spirit, holding a world record for the highest altitude achieved in a hot air balloon at 69,000 feet. His contributions to aviation were further acknowledged when he was made an honorary air commodore by the Indian Air Force in 1994.

In addition to his business achievements, Singhania served as the chairman of the governing council of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, from 2007 to 2012, and was appointed sheriff of Mumbai in 2006.
