Colonel Sandeep Srivastava Falls Victim to Online Fraud
A 67-year-old retired Army colonel from Ambegaon Khurd, Colonel Sandeep Srivastava, has lodged a complaint with the Pune cyber police regarding a significant online fraud incident. The retired officer reported a staggering loss of Rs 1.03 crore due to a fraudulent online share trading scheme that took place between October and December of the previous year.
The circumstances surrounding the fraud began when Colonel Srivastava’s phone number was added to a messaging application group that was promoting high returns from share trading. The group administrator subsequently sent him a link to download a trading application, which marked the beginning of his financial troubles. Initially, the colonel purchased low-value shares but was later advised to invest in high-value shares and initial public offerings (IPOs).
As the scheme progressed, Colonel Srivastava transferred money to 15 different bank accounts as instructed by the group administrator. Although the trading application displayed a profit of more than Rs 4 crore, he was unable to withdraw any of the funds, leading to his realization that he had been a victim of fraud. Senior inspector Swapnali Shinde confirmed that the victim stays with his family, highlighting the personal impact of this financial loss.
This incident is part of a broader trend of online share trading frauds that have been reported across India, where fraudsters manipulate victims with promises of high returns. The case underscores the vulnerabilities that individuals face in the digital age, particularly in financial matters.
In a separate development, Colonel Sandeep Srivastava has also opened a homestay in Kathwara village along the Lucknow highway. This venture was suggested by his daughter as a way to fill the emptiness felt after their children moved abroad. The homestay charges Rs 1,500 for a room and aims to provide a welcoming environment for travelers.
The Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious target of establishing 50,000 homestays across the state as part of a tourism initiative. Colonel Srivastava’s new business aligns with this goal, as he seeks to engage with visitors and foster connections through hospitality. He expressed his sentiments, stating, “What began as an idea from my daughter has turned into something that keeps us engaged and connected with people.”
As the investigation into the online fraud continues, authorities are urging individuals to remain vigilant against similar scams. The growing prevalence of cybercrime necessitates increased awareness and caution among potential investors in online trading platforms.
