Violence Erupts in Uttam Nagar
“We demand that our son should get justice. The police have not conducted any inquiry or asked us about him,” stated Memraj, the father of Tarun Kumar, a 26-year-old man who was killed during a clash in Uttam Nagar on March 4, 2026.
The incident unfolded during Holi celebrations when an 11-year-old girl accidentally threw a water balloon that struck a woman, igniting a dispute that escalated into violence. Witnesses report that Tarun was attacked by a group of 15-20 individuals armed with sticks and rods.
Following the incident, at least eight people have been arrested, although the police have faced criticism for their handling of the investigation. Ramesh, Tarun’s uncle, described the attack, saying, “The moment he entered the street, some 8-10 people attacked him with sticks, rods and stones.” This violent episode has heightened communal tensions in the area, involving both the Hindu and Muslim communities.
Protests erupted in Uttam Nagar after Tarun’s death, leading to vehicles being set on fire as demonstrators expressed their anger and frustration. BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat commented, “It is very shameful, when a kid hits someone by mistake and such an incident was carried out,” highlighting the tragic nature of the events.
In response to the unrest, police have deployed additional security forces to maintain order in the area. They are also examining CCTV footage to identify more suspects involved in the attack.
Memraj, expressing his discontent, added, “We are poor people. The police say some arrests have been made, but we have not been shown anything.” His call for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the incident reflects the family’s desire for transparency and justice.
