On March 11, 2023, a significant outage affected Instagram users across multiple regions, with the highest concentration of problems reported in the United States. The outage began around 2 AM EST and 7:40 AM IST, leading to widespread frustration among users trying to send or receive messages.
According to reports, thousands of Instagram users were unable to access their direct messages. Over 10,000 complaints were logged on Downdetector, with 71 percent of those complaints specifically related to access issues within the app. Additionally, 20 percent of users reported server connection problems, while 5 percent experienced issues with their Instagram feed or timeline not loading.
Users in the United States were particularly vocal about their difficulties, with many turning to other social media platforms to confirm the outage. Complaints peaked early in the morning, with users expressing their frustrations through various posts. One user noted, “Are Instagram dms down or… am I cooked?” while another stated, “My messages, my contacts on Instagram, I can’t use the search tool or even scroll up! The whole thing is just broken right now.”
Reports also indicated that around 250 users in India faced similar issues, alongside approximately 170 complaints from the United Kingdom. The outage’s impact was felt globally, as users sought to communicate but found themselves unable to do so.
Despite the widespread nature of the problem, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has not yet commented on the outage. This lack of communication has left users seeking clarity on the situation.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact cause of the outage. Speculation arose about a potential link to the ongoing US-Iran war, but this connection has not been substantiated.
As of now, users continue to experience difficulties with Instagram messaging, with many hoping for a swift resolution to restore normal functionality.
