Zion-a Chana, generally known as the patriarch of the “world’s largest household”, died in Aizawl on Sunday. He was 76.
Chana, who held the file for having 38 wives, 89 youngsters and 36 grandchildren, had diabetes and hypertension. He was shifted from his residence in Baktawng Tlangnuam village to Aizawl, 60 km away, on June 11. He died at a personal hospital.

Chana and his household lived in a four-storied home known as ‘Chhuan Thar Run’ or New Era House. Through the years, it turned a vacationer hotspot, and his story was coated by worldwide media.
In 1942, Chana’s grandfather Khuangtuaha based a polygamous cult Chana Pawl or Chhuanthar. Chana carried it ahead and it now has about 2,000 followers, all of whom reside and work in a self-sustained unit round the home. About 400 households are a part of the cult.
Solely the bottom flooring of Chhuan Thar Run is open to guests. Chana, who lived on the highest flooring, didn’t meet anybody.
