The Missing Link project stretches 13.3 km long. It will cut the distance between Mumbai and Pune by around 6 km. Travel time is expected to decrease by approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

As of midday, the initial phase will allow only light vehicles on the new route. Buses may be permitted in a subsequent phase. Heavy vehicles will continue using the existing route.

The project features the world’s widest underground tunnel, measuring 22.33 metres. This development comes as Maharashtra Day celebrations are underway, highlighting regional pride.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been operational since 2002. However, the stretch in the Western Ghats has presented challenges due to sharp turns and steep gradients.

Traffic congestion in this area leads to fuel wastage worth ₹1 Crore daily. On normal days, average delays reach around 30 minutes, while weekends can see delays stretching up to two hours.

This project is expected to ease traffic congestion significantly. Officials anticipate that it could even break records, potentially earning recognition from Guinness World Records.
