Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the project, which spans 13.3 kilometers and cost approximately Rs 6,700 crore. The project aims to enhance road safety and reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune.

As of midday, reports indicate that traffic congestion worsened due to the dual events. Fadnavis acknowledged the inconvenience caused and apologized for the delays.

The new route is expected to cut travel time by 25-30 minutes and decrease the distance by around 6 kilometers. It includes advanced features like tunnels, viaducts, and a striking 182-meter-high cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley.

This bridge is designed to withstand wind speeds up to 240 km/h, with speed limits set at 100 km/h for cars and 80 km/h for buses. Currently, only light motor vehicles and passenger buses are permitted; heavy vehicles will not be allowed until at least October 31.

Fadnavis described the project as an “engineering marvel” that will boost economic activity worth Rs 70,000 crore in Maharashtra. However, experts raised concerns about potential dense fog during monsoon and winter months affecting visibility on the expressway.

Traffic conditions are expected to improve as adjustments are made following today’s disruptions. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
