Significant Developments in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha is scheduled to take up a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla today. This motion has been signed by 118 Opposition MPs, who accuse him of acting in a ‘blatantly partisan’ manner while conducting proceedings in the House.

The Opposition has submitted a no-confidence notice to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, which has garnered support from various political parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, and Left parties, although it notably excludes the Trinamool Congress.

In response to the unfolding situation, both the BJP and the Congress have issued a three-line whip to their Lok Sabha MPs, directing them to be present in the House until Tuesday.

Support and Opposition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has openly supported Birla, asserting that the Speaker has adhered to the values of the Constitution and parliamentary democracy. Despite this backing, the motion against Om Birla is unlikely to pass, according to some sources.

Today marks the commencement of the second phase of the budget session of Parliament, which will continue until the 2nd of next month. During this session, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is also scheduled to make a statement regarding the situation in West Asia, which has entered its tenth day of conflict.

In a notable procedural change, it has been indicated that Mr. Birla will not preside over the proceedings during this critical time but will instead sit among the members.

The first part of the Budget Session began on 28th January and continued until 13th February, setting the stage for the current discussions and motions.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final outcome of today’s proceedings and the potential implications for Speaker Om Birla.
