The Karnataka government has proposed a new grading system for third language subjects in the SSLC examination, set to be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year. Under this proposal, students will receive grades instead of traditional marks for these subjects, including Hindi and NSQF subjects.

Grades will be awarded based on performance, with ‘A’ for scores between 80% and 100%, ‘B’ for 50% to 79%, and ‘C’ for scores up to 49%. This change aims to alleviate academic pressure on students while promoting skill-based and language learning.

Importantly, third language and NSQF subjects will be classified as additional subjects on the marks card and will not impact a student’s pass or fail status. The overall SSLC examination pattern will remain unchanged, with six core subjects still accounting for a total of 625 marks.

The notification regarding this grading system is currently in draft form and is open for public objections and suggestions for a period of seven days. The government is actively seeking input from stakeholders to refine the proposal before final implementation.

This initiative reflects a broader trend in educational reform aimed at reducing stress and enhancing the learning experience for students. By shifting to a grading system, the Karnataka government hopes to encourage a more holistic approach to education.

Details remain unconfirmed as the proposal awaits public feedback and further deliberation. Observers are keen to see how this change will affect student performance and overall educational outcomes in the state.
