In a stark revelation, a total of 1.23 million people died from tuberculosis (TB) in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for global health initiatives. This alarming statistic highlights TB as the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, with an estimated 10.7 million people falling ill with TB worldwide during the same year.

Immediate circumstances reveal that only about 2 in 5 people with drug-resistant TB accessed treatment in 2024, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current healthcare responses. The situation is particularly dire for those living with HIV, who are 12 times more likely to fall ill with TB compared to those without the virus.

In 2024, approximately 150,000 people died of HIV-associated TB, and globally, only 61% of the estimated number of people living with HIV who developed TB received antiretroviral therapy (ART). The ongoing crisis of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) remains a significant public health threat.

In a broader context, the largest number of new TB cases occurred in the WHO South-East Asia Region, accounting for 34% of all cases. This highlights the need for increased funding, with an estimated US$ 22 billion needed annually for TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care to meet global targets by 2027.

On a related note, India has made significant strides in its energy strategy, expanding its energy import sources from 27 countries to 41 over the past 11 years. This expansion aims to ensure a stable supply of essential resources.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized, “India has always stood for peace in the interest of humanity and dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions to this problem.” He also assured that the government is ensuring smooth supplies of petrol, diesel, oil, gas, and fertilizers.

As the world grapples with the TB crisis and India’s energy initiatives unfold, the urgency for effective public health responses and international cooperation remains paramount. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of these developments on global health and energy security.

The wider picture

World Tuberculosis Day serves as a reminder that tuberculosis is preventable, curable, and eliminable. Observed annually on March 24, this day aims to raise awareness about the global burden of tuberculosis, which continues to affect millions worldwide. In 2026, the theme is “Yes! We Can End TB!”, reflecting a renewed commitment to combat this infectious disease, particularly in high-burden countries like India.

India bears the largest burden of tuberculosis globally, with significant efforts underway to address this public health crisis. In Kargil, the District Health Society organized events to mark World Tuberculosis Day, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and awareness in the fight against TB. The Deputy Commissioner of Kargil highlighted the crucial role of students in spreading awareness about tuberculosis, urging them to take an active part in educational campaigns.

Mass screening camps are being organized across Kargil to eliminate TB from the district. These initiatives are part of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, which aims to eradicate tuberculosis in India. The District Tuberculosis Officer shared data on TB cases notified in Kargil over the past five years, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and action.

Tuberculosis spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, making awareness and early detection critical. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) poses an additional challenge, requiring longer and more complex treatment regimens that can last between 9 and 18 months. The Nikshay digital portal has been introduced to enable healthcare authorities to track patients and monitor treatment adherence, enhancing the management of TB cases.

As the community rallies around World Tuberculosis Day, the TB CAB Weekly Newsletter has dedicated its latest issue to this event, including calls to action and advocacy resources. This publication aims to mobilize support and resources to combat tuberculosis effectively.

Officials and health advocates emphasize that ending TB is achievable, even in today’s challenging global environment, if backed by leadership, investment, solidarity, and decisive action. The commitment shown in Kargil is a testament to the potential for local initiatives to make a significant impact in the fight against tuberculosis.

As the day unfolds, observers will be watching closely to see how these initiatives evolve and what further actions will be taken to ensure that tuberculosis is effectively addressed in Kargil and beyond. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as the fight against tuberculosis remains a critical public health priority.
