Abishek Porel, a wicketkeeper-batter for Bengal in domestic cricket and the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been arrested in Hooghly. The arrest follows allegations made by a medical student, leading to a case filed at Mogra Police Station.
The complaint against Porel includes claims of a physical relationship established under the promise of marriage, as well as criminal intimidation and the recording of private moments. Police took Porel into custody on Tuesday and formally arrested him after questioning. He was subsequently sent for a medical examination and presented before the Chinsurah Court as the legal process begins.
Allegations and Legal Proceedings
The woman, a medical student from Karnataka, lodged her complaint on June 23. She alleged that she and Porel had been in a relationship for approximately three-and-a-half years and had plans to marry. According to her complaint, the situation deteriorated after she reportedly discovered his relationships with other women, which led to the breakdown of their own relationship.
The allegations detailed in the First Information Report (FIR) against Porel include that he illegally confined the complainant, denied her food, and deliberately kept her isolated. This alleged confinement and denial of sustenance reportedly left her physically weak and unable to walk properly. The complaint further states that despite having a flight, she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to injuries sustained. These claims are part of the complaint and have not been established in court.
The complaint also alleges sexual assault and that private material, including intimate recordings, was later used to threaten or intimidate her. An incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, is specifically mentioned in the complaint, detailing the alleged confinement and denial of food.
The matter reached the Calcutta High Court after the complainant approached the court. The High Court subsequently directed the police to take steps to arrest Porel as part of the ongoing investigation. Police sources indicate that a case has been registered against the cricketer under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 69, along with provisions of the Information Technology Act.
Court Directives and Investigation
In addition to ordering Porel’s arrest, the Calcutta High Court also directed Mogra Police to seize Porel’s electronic devices. This order aims to prevent the circulation of any photographs or other private material linked to the complainant. As part of the investigation, police had already seized a pen drive, which has been sent for forensic examination.
Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that there was a case lodged against Porel and a court order for his arrest. Porel was arrested by the Mogra police late Monday night and was expected to be produced before a court in Chinsurah on Tuesday.
The allegations against Porel have not yet been established in court. The facts of the case will be determined through the ongoing investigation and subsequent legal proceedings. Porel, who represents Bengal in domestic cricket and the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, will now face the legal proceedings stemming from the complaint.
The investigation into the allegations began following the complaint filed on June 23.
