Lewis-Skelly’s Rise and Challenges at Arsenal
Myles Lewis-Skelly, an academy graduate, has experienced a rapid ascent at Arsenal since his breakthrough in the 2024-25 season. Initially making an impact as a left-back due to squad injuries, his performances led to him becoming one of the top young full-backs in the Premier League. This form also saw him break into the England squad, where he became the youngest player to score on debut in a 2-0 win against Albania in March 2025. Following this, he signed a new five-year contract with the club.
Despite his success at left-back, Lewis-Skelly’s natural position is in midfield, a role he maintained was his best throughout his time in Arsenal’s Hale End academy. His ability to invert into midfield, protect the ball, and evade opponents was evident even when playing in the defensive line. However, the subsequent season presented more challenges for the teenager.
The return to fitness of defender Riccardo Calafiori, signed for £42m in 2024, and the arrival of Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen, limited Lewis-Skelly’s playing time. Both Calafiori and Hincapie are older and more experienced than Lewis-Skelly. Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged being “tough” on the young player.
Towards the end of last season, with Martin Zubimendi’s performances declining, Lewis-Skelly was given an opportunity to play in his preferred midfield role against Fulham. His strong showing led to him starting all but one of the remaining games as Arsenal secured the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final, where they were defeated by Paris St-Germain.
Transfer Speculation and Future Prospects
The financial aspect of modern football means that academy graduates like Lewis-Skelly represent “pure profit” if sold, a fact he acknowledged by captioning a picture with the Premier League trophy with “pure profit” during the title celebrations at Selhurst Park. Arsenal, aiming for sustainability, spent around £250m on new players last summer, which necessitates considering player sales.
While the club had previously considered offers for Lewis-Skelly, his strong finish to the season in central midfield may have prompted a reassessment of his status. However, Arsenal is reportedly close to signing Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes for a fee potentially reaching £80m. This acquisition could create further competition for Lewis-Skelly in midfield.
There are reports that Chelsea and Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Lewis-Skelly. Sources suggest that Chelsea has had him on their radar for some time. If Arsenal were to receive a substantial offer, club officials might find it difficult to decline.
Despite the transfer speculation, Lewis-Skelly’s talent and history with Arsenal keep him in contention for playing time. The late finish of the World Cup and the involvement of several Arsenal players in the tournament mean that many of his competitors for a starting spot, including Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino, are behind him in match fitness.
Lewis-Skelly has impressed in pre-season friendlies against Girona and Real Betis, demonstrating his ability as a deep-lying midfielder. He also showed good link-up play with Calafiori, covering at left-back when needed. Calafiori spoke positively about their connection, stating, “I really like to play with him, a really good player.”
Former player Lee Dixon suggested that Lewis-Skelly should seek assurances from Mikel Arteta regarding his role, noting that at almost any other club, Lewis-Skelly would be a starter. Dixon emphasized the need for a “really deep discussion” between the player and manager to clarify his future at the club.
Lewis-Skelly’s contract at Emirates Stadium is set to expire in June 2030. The upcoming Community Shield match against Manchester City, scheduled in nine days, could provide Lewis-Skelly with an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities in Arsenal’s midfield.
