The team is currently ranked 10th in the ODI rankings. Even with two upcoming ODI matches against India before the September 30 cut-off date, these victories would not be enough for them to secure one of the automatic qualification berths. The top eight teams in the ODI rankings by September 30, excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, qualify directly for the event.
Qualification pathway for West Indies
The primary path for the West Indies to reach the 2027 World Cup is through the World Cup Qualifier tournament, scheduled for February. This tournament will feature 10 teams. The West Indies and Ireland, as the two lowest-ranked non-host Full Members in the ODI rankings by September 30, 2026, will enter the Qualifier directly.
They will be joined by four teams from the Cricket World Cup League 2 and four teams that emerge from the Qualifier Playoff. The Qualifier Playoff itself will include the bottom four teams from CWC League 2 and four teams from the Challenge League, which represents the third tier of the qualification pathway. The top four teams from this eight-team playoff will then advance to the main Qualifier.
The Challenge League consists of 12 teams divided into two groups of six, with each team participating in three round-robin tournaments during the qualification cycle. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Qualifier Playoff.
Routes through the Qualifier
Winning the World Cup Qualifier would provide the most direct route for the West Indies, as the winner will advance straight into the second round of the 2027 World Cup. However, if they finish between second and fourth place in the Qualifier, they would face an additional challenge.
These three teams would enter the first round of the World Cup, known as the Super Series, alongside another team from the Qualifier. Only the winner of this stage would then progress to the second round of the tournament. This structure means the West Indies have limited room for error in the qualification process.
The consequences of not qualifying extend beyond the World Cup. The West Indies also failed to participate in the 2025 Champions Trophy, a competition they had not played in since 2013. The objective for the former two-time champions is to successfully navigate the qualifiers and secure their return to cricket’s biggest ODI stage in 2027.
Afghanistan has already secured a direct berth for the 2027 World Cup following a win against Ireland in Belfast. They join Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh among the teams that have qualified automatically, in addition to co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe.
