Guimaraes joins Arsenal for new challenge
Arsenal have completed the signing of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a transfer valued at £75m. The 28-year-old Brazil international has agreed to a four-year deal with the option for an additional 12 months. Guimaraes expressed that the move was one of the “toughest decisions” of his life, citing his desire for a new challenge.
Guimaraes stated, “This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me. But I wanted to experience something new in my life. I feel ready for a new challenge for myself and my family.” He also mentioned receiving messages from future teammates, including fellow midfielder Declan Rice, who reportedly told him, “come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends.”
The midfielder further elaborated on his motivation, saying, “I’m at the point of my life, I think I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.” He will wear the no. 39 shirt for the Gunners.
Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, welcomed Guimaraes, highlighting his mentality and quality. Berta noted that Guimaraes will bring strong leadership to the squad and strengthen the heart of the team. He also pointed out Guimaraes’ versatility, capable of playing as both a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box player, contributing goals and assists annually.
Impact on Arsenal’s midfield and Newcastle’s sales
Guimaraes’ arrival is expected to further develop Arsenal’s playing style and increase internal competitiveness, which is considered essential for maintaining high standards in pursuit of major trophies. His presence could also allow players like Declan Rice to have a break in certain games following a demanding previous season.
Newcastle had initially been keen to retain the Brazil international, who had two years remaining on his contract, plus a club-held option for a third. However, Guimaraes informed Newcastle earlier this summer of his desire to join Arsenal if a suitable offer was made. Newcastle’s initial bid for Guimaraes was rejected before the £75m fee was agreed upon.
The departure of Guimaraes means Newcastle have now surpassed £240m in player sales this summer. Other significant sales include Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m and Sandro Tonali to Spurs for £100m. Newcastle described the agreed fee for Guimaraes as one of the top-10 highest transfer fees ever received for a player aged 28 or over, and a record for a player of his age and position combined.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m. During his time at the club, he made 195 appearances, scoring 31 goals. He played a crucial role in Newcastle’s improved fortunes under former head coach Eddie Howe, helping them qualify for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025. He also became the first captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy for Newcastle after their victory over Liverpool in the 2025 Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle stated they wished Guimaraes and his family well. Guimaraes left Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week to finalise his move to Emirates Stadium after a breakthrough in negotiations.
