Lighthearted Moment in Warm-Up Match

During India’s warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, a moment of levity occurred when Ravindra Jadeja mimicked Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling action. This playful imitation, performed from the stands, reportedly left head coach Gautam Gambhir laughing.

A commentator described the scene, noting Jadeja’s near-perfect act and Gambhir’s reaction. The incident, captured on video, showed Jadeja exaggerating the wrist-spinner’s action, adding a humorous element to the team’s preparations in Sri Lanka.

On-Field Performances and Contributions

Amidst the lighthearted moments, the warm-up match also saw significant cricketing performances. Devdutt Padikkal made a strong case for inclusion in India’s opening Test playing XI, scoring an unbeaten 142. He capitalized on a favorable batting surface, hitting 18 boundaries and demonstrating comfort against both pace and spin. Padikkal reached his century in 121 balls.

After Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early, Padikkal and KL Rahul formed a 96-run partnership for the second wicket. Padikkal continued his impressive innings alongside Jadeja. India concluded the second day at 357/6 in 90 overs, trailing SLC XI by six runs, who had declared at 363/8.

Jadeja contributed a valuable 63 runs before retiring, while Manav Suthar scored 41, helping to stabilize the innings. Suthar later produced an unbeaten 29, showing patience before attacking the spinners and hitting three fours and a six. His partnership with Jadeja helped India recover from 180/5 at tea.

On the bowling front, both Jadeja and Kuldeep had productive outings. Jadeja finished with figures of 2/64 from 15 overs, dismissing Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Ramesh Mendis. Kuldeep claimed 2/76 from 18 overs, removing Ahan Wickramasinghe and Anjala Bandara. Suthar also impressed with 2/33 from 13 overs.

Mixed Results for Other Players

However, not all players had a successful outing. Rishabh Pant scored only two runs before being caught at long-off while attempting an attacking shot against Ramesh Mendis. Dhruv Jurel also struggled, falling for one after an inside edge was taken at short square leg against off-spin.

Suthar then joined Jadeja, and together they added 76 runs to help repair the innings. Padikkal later returned to the crease and hit four more boundaries alongside Saransh Jain, who retired after scoring 22. The warm-up match provided valuable practice for India ahead of the opening Test, scheduled to begin on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium.

Significance for Upcoming Test Series

The practice game offered the Indian players crucial exposure to conditions they might face in the upcoming Test series. Both Jadeja and Kuldeep are anticipated to play significant roles with the ball, especially on pitches where spin is expected to become more influential as the matches progress. Jadeja’s decision to retire out at 63 allowed other members of India’s batting line-up to gain time in the middle.

The contributions from Padikkal, Jadeja, Suthar, and the lower order ensured India remained competitive in the warm-up match. The team’s performance, combined with the lighter moments, contributed to their preparations for the series. The opening Test is set to commence on August 15.
