BCCI Considers Leadership Change
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly evaluating potential changes in its senior selection leadership. Former batter VVS Laxman has emerged as a leading candidate to potentially replace Ajit Agarkar as chief selector if Agarkar’s contract is not renewed. Agarkar’s current tenure is set to conclude in September 2026.
While an extension for Agarkar through the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup was previously considered likely, recent events have led senior board officials to reconsider their plans for the selection committee. Unapproved discussions concerning Rohit Sharma’s future in One-Day Internationals during India’s recent tour of England reportedly caused friction within the top BCCI management, raising questions about the committee’s long-term administrative vision.
Laxman’s Credentials and Agarkar’s Tenure
Should the board decide on a new direction, Laxman is widely seen as a strong contender for the role. He currently serves as the Head of Cricket at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. In this capacity, Laxman has been instrumental in mentoring emerging talent and has gained significant experience with young players entering international cricket. He also has familiarity with the national team setup, having acted as India’s interim head coach on several occasions, including during the T20I series in Zimbabwe.
Despite the recent speculation, Agarkar remains a candidate to retain his position. The former Indian fast bowler has expressed interest in continuing his tenure through the 2027 ODI World Cup. Since taking over the selection panel in 2023, India has achieved success, winning the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cup titles, as well as the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, the panel also managed a generational shift, integrating new domestic talent while transitioning senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja.
A final decision on the chief selector position is anticipated after India’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka and the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September. The BCCI has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future and Selector’s Role
Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has indicated that Rohit Sharma is not planning to retire from ODI cricket voluntarily. Instead, Kaif believes Sharma intends to leave the decision about his future with the national team to the selectors. Sharma’s future has been under scrutiny since India’s ODI series against England.
Reports prior to the tour suggested that the senior selection committee had informed Sharma that he was not part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with a focus on younger opening options, including Yashasvi Jaiswal. Speculation intensified after Sharma scored 26 runs off 47 balls in the second ODI at Cardiff, with some reports suggesting the series decider at Lord’s on July 19 could be his final ODI appearance for India.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed these claims before the match, stating that no decision had been made for the Lord’s fixture to be Sharma’s farewell game. This clarification ended immediate speculation, though it did not confirm Sharma’s long-term involvement in plans for the 2027 World Cup. Sharma responded by scoring 138 runs off 110 deliveries during India’s chase of 388 at Lord’s, becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the venue, despite India losing the series 2-1.
Following the match, captain Shubman Gill stated that Sharma had not informed the team of any retirement plans, and Sharma himself emphasized his focus on scoring runs for India. Kaif commented that Sharma’s recent actions suggest he has no intention of stepping away, effectively saying, “If I am not playing well, you take the call yourselves. Drop me.”
Kaif also questioned the lack of clarity from the team management regarding Sharma’s long-term future. While coaches have supported Sharma playing freely, Kaif believes the management should explicitly state whether Sharma is part of their World Cup plans. He highlighted that Sharma has previously made difficult decisions for the team’s benefit, such as retiring from T20 internationals after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and retiring from Test cricket in May 2025 after opting out of a Test against Australia in January 2025.
Kaif praised BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia for publicly dismissing reports about the Lord’s ODI being Sharma’s final match, noting that the statement prevented unnecessary speculation. He urged the BCCI to independently evaluate recommendations from management and the selection committee. The BCCI’s statement before the Lord’s match helped ensure the focus remained on the cricket.
The BCCI secretary’s intervention allowed the match at Lord’s to proceed without the distraction of retirement rumors.
