Jabalpur news: Cruise Tragedy at Bargi Dam Raises Safety Concerns

jabalpur news — IN news

A tragic incident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur occurred on May 1, 2026, when the Narmada Queen cruise capsized amid a storm. The boat was carrying over 40 tourists at the time.

As of midday Friday, at least nine people have died, and several others remain missing. Survivors report that life jackets were not distributed before departure.

The cruise capsized around 6 PM, shortly after a yellow alert for heavy rain was issued by the weather department. This raises significant concerns about the safety protocols followed by the MP Tourism Department.

The Madhya Pradesh government announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each deceased victim’s family. Rescue operations faced delays, which survivors claim may have cost lives.

Eyewitnesses describe how conditions changed rapidly. “The weather was clear when we boarded. But as the boat reached mid-dam, the skies turned suddenly,” said Roshan Anand Verma.

Reports indicate that the pilot and crew allegedly abandoned ship before it capsized. This negligence has prompted calls for accountability from officials and citizens alike.

So far, divers have recovered five bodies, while six individuals remain unaccounted for as rescue efforts continue. A high-level investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident thoroughly.

Survivors like Siya noted that life jackets were kept inside a cabin but were not distributed by staff. “Some people took them out themselves,” she said.

The Narmada Queen, operational since 2006, had undergone annual maintenance in October 2025. Despite this, serious lapses in judgment regarding passenger safety are evident.

The exact number of missing persons is unclear as reports vary. Authorities are working to confirm all details surrounding this tragic event.

This incident raises critical questions about cruise safety and operational decisions made during adverse weather conditions—a matter that will be under scrutiny in the days to come.
