Ratna Debnath has made history by winning the Panihati Assembly constituency as a BJP candidate. This marks her debut election and highlights a significant political shift in West Bengal.
Debnath secured victory with 87,977 votes, defeating Tirthankar Ghosh from the TMC, who received 59,141 votes. The margin of victory was 28,836 votes.
Kalatan Dasgupta from CPI(M) finished third with 24,032 votes. This election is notable not just for its results but also for the circumstances surrounding Debnath’s candidacy.
Debnath entered politics following the tragic rape and murder of her daughter at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. The incident sparked widespread outrage and ignited her passion for women’s safety and accountability in governance.
In her victory speech, she stated, “This victory is the victory of the people of Panihati, of the entire Bengal.” She dedicated her win to Prime Minister Modi, expressing gratitude for his support.
Debnath emphasized that she could not have achieved this alone. Her campaign resonated with voters concerned about safety and governance.
The BJP’s success in this election is historic. They crossed the two-thirds mark with a total of 202 seats in the West Bengal Assembly.
This significant outcome may reshape the political landscape in West Bengal as voters respond to issues like women’s safety and governance accountability.
