Smart Electricity: New Prepaid Meter Rules in Uttar Pradesh

स्मार्ट बिजली — IN news

In a significant update for electricity consumers, Uttar Pradesh has announced that prepaid smart meters will now operate similarly to postpaid systems. This change allows users a grace period of 15 days each month to recharge their meters.

Previously, users faced immediate power cuts when their balance ran out. This new system aims to ease the billing process significantly.

As of early Tuesday, consumers will receive monthly bills detailing their usage from the first to the last day of each month. Payments can be made over this extended period.

The government has also introduced a facility for paying outstanding bills from before April 30 in ten easy installments. This initiative is designed to help consumers manage their financial obligations better.

Monthly bills will be sent directly to users via SMS and WhatsApp, ensuring timely notifications. Consumers can also register complaints through the 1912 portal if they face issues with their smart meters.

Energy Minister A.K. Sharma emphasized that this step was taken with consumer convenience in mind. He stated, “Now the billing system will be easier, and people will receive timely information about their bills.”

The government plans to set up special camps to address problems related to smart meters and billing processes. Strict directives regarding electricity supply have also been issued.

As of midday, officials are optimistic that these changes will lead to improved service and satisfaction among electricity consumers in the region.
