The DKI Jakarta BPBD has issued an urgent call for residents to stop burning garbage due to the increasing fire risk associated with the strengthening El Niño phenomenon.
As of early Tuesday, officials reported that El Niño is intensifying, which may trigger prolonged droughts and elevated temperatures.
This shift raises serious concerns about fire hazards in densely populated and dry areas.
Open burning can lead to rapid fire spread, putting communities at significant risk.
In response, the Jakarta BPBD has urged residents to report any potential emergencies through the city’s emergency service.
Marulituwa Sijabat from BPBD emphasized, “We urge people to be vigilant about open fires and the use of electrical equipment and fire.”
The agency has prepared firefighting measures and is coordinating with BMKG for early warning information.
Monitoring efforts are underway in fire-prone areas, ensuring that fire hydrants and firefighting fleets are ready for quick response.
Preparation is essential to reduce risks from extreme climate events, especially as conditions worsen.
Residents are advised to stay alert and protect the environment amid these changing weather patterns.
“We urge people to stay alert, protect the environment, and report potential emergencies through Jakarta’s 112 service,” Sijabat added.
