At least six people have died due to heavy rains in northeastern Brazil. The storms have also displaced thousands, raising concerns about safety and infrastructure.

As of midday, reports indicate that flooding and landslides occurred in Recife, Pernambuco. These events resulted in at least two deaths.

Approximately 1,500 individuals were displaced across Pernambuco and Paraiba states. Emergency services are responding to the crisis with urgency.

The National Center for Risk and Disaster Management in Brazil issued 22 emergency alerts as severe weather continues. The alerts highlight the ongoing threat from thunderstorms and potential further rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also raised alarms, issuing yellow warnings for rainfall and strong winds in Delhi. This warning extends through the next two days.

The IMD recorded a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung station in Delhi. Temperature fluctuations are expected to continue as weather patterns evolve.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated, “The government continues to monitor the situation to provide all necessary assistance.” His administration is focused on managing the fallout from these severe weather events.

A study released last year indicated that rain disasters, including flooding and landslides, tripled in Brazil from 1991 to 2023. This trend emphasizes the increasing frequency of such catastrophic events.

Officials are still assessing the full extent of damage caused by the recent storms. No timeline has been shared regarding recovery efforts or additional support for affected communities.
